Over millenia, its unique position has led to repeated conquest and colonisation until 1991 when Ukraine gained its independence after the breakup of the Soviet Union.
Despite being a developing country, Ukraine is the largest grain exporter in the world. Its natural resources are immense. Mining and steel manufacturing are important industries in Ukraine.
